A spectacular coastline carved by nature. |
THE renowned Great Ocean Road
has been serving holidaymakers
and day trippers seeking rugged
coastal views or a dip off inviting
beaches since it opened in 1932. It was built under an employment
program established to provide
work for World War I veterans who
worked under extremely arduous
conditions. The Great Ocean Road
officially starts at Torquay and
finishes at Allansford where it joins
the Princes Highway near
Warrnambool.
THE limestone formations and
sheer cliffs around Port
Campbell are some of the
best-known landmarks in
Australia.
This National Park was
established in 1964 and covers
1750 hectares of coastal strip
between Princetown and
Peterborough.
The Twelve Apostles, London
Bridge, the Blowhole and Loch Ard
Gorge are the best known features
but there are many more.
A build-up of the skeletons of
millions of tiny marine animals
are how these unique formations
were created. When the sea level
retreated, this soft limestone was
exposed to the elements of the
Southern Ocean.
As well as the spectacular coastal
scenery there are heathlands,
grasslands, eucalypt forest and
abundant wildlife.
The National Park Information
Centre in Port Campbell has a
comprehensive display on the
park's natural history and a video
on the park is shown regularly.
